Murudeshwar Temple in Karnataka is famous for the world’s second tallest statue of Lord Shiva.
The word Murudeshwar originated from Ramayana. It is believed that Hindu gods attained immortality by worshiping the Atma-Linga. Ravana, the Lanka king wanted to attain immortality by attaining the Atma-Linga so he worshipped Lord Shiva with great devotion as the Atma-Linga belonged to Shiva. Shiva became pleased by his prayer and appeared in front of Ravana and asked him what he wanted. Ravana asked Shiva for Atma-Linga. Shiva agreed to give him the Atma-Linga on a condition that it should be never placed on the ground before he reaches Lanka. If it gets placed on the ground then it would be impossible to move it from there. After getting the Atma-Linga, Ravana started his journey back to Lanka.
Lord Vishnu came to know that with the Atma-Linga, Ravana will create havoc on earth so, he approached Lord Ganesha to prevent Ravana from reaching Lanka with the Atma-Linga. Lord Ganesha knew that Ravana was a very devoted person and perform prayers every evening without fail. So, Lord Ganesha used this as a trick to confiscate Atma-Linga from Ravana. When Ravana was nearing Gokarna, Lord Vishnu covered the sun with clouds to give him the appearance of dusk. Ravana now had to perform his daily prayer but was worried as with the Atma-Linga in his hand it will be difficult for him to perform his prayer.
Lord Ganesha in the face of a brahmin boy appeared before Ravana. Ravana asked him to hold the Atma-Linga and told him not to place it in the ground so that he can perform his prayer. Lord Ganesha aggreed on a condition that he will call Ravana thrice and if Ravana did not come then he will place the Atma-Linga on the ground. When Ravana returned he find that Ganesha has already placed the Atma-Linga on the ground. Lord Vishnu then removes his illusion and it became day again. Ravana realised that he has been tricked and tried to destroy the Atma-Linga.
Due to great force exerted by Ravana to destroy the Atma-Linga it became scattered. One piece fell at Surathkal where famous Sadashiva temple has been built. Then he threw the case covering to Atma-Linga in a place called Sajjeshwar. Then he threw the lid of the case to a place called Guneshwar and Dhareshwar. Finally he threw the cloth covering the Atma-Linga to a place called Mrideshwar in Kanduka hill which has been renamed as Murudeshwar.
Murudeshwar temple is built on Kanduka hill. The temple has a 20 storied gopura which has observatory at the top of the tower from where you can see a beautiful view of Lord Shiva. The statue of Lord Shiva is 123 feet in height.
