Some people say that chivalry is dead, but there are ways in today's world to bring it back to life.
Step 1: Be respectful
Act respectfully toward women. Honor your word. Call when you say you will, arrive when you say you will, and follow the rules of basic courtesy.
Tip
Being chivalrous is not the same as sucking up.
Step 2: Holding doors
Hold the door for a lady. It's the most basic expression of chivalry. Practice it with all women so that it becomes a matter of course and habit rather than a special gesture.
Step 3: Enter a room after a lady
Enter a room behind a lady. Open the door, step aside, and allow her to enter a couple of steps before you.
Step 4: Offer her your coat or seat
Offer her your coat if she's cold and your seat if she's standing. A gentleman should always offer his coat and seat to a lady.
Tip
Always offer your chivalrous service, but don't insist. The option to decline allows a lady more control. She may not want your coat or seat.
Step 5: Offer to pay for dinner
Offer to pay for dinner on all occasions.
Step 6: Pull out a lady's chair
Pull out a lady's chair when she's sitting down and hold it until she's seated. Never sit before the lady does. Always rise from your seat when the lady gets up. A gentleman should always rise when a lady enters or leaves the room.
Step 7: Do the small things
Do small, nice things for a lady. These are the things they will appreciate the most. Much of chivalry is built around common sense.
Step 8: Never disrespect a lady
Never be disrespectful. Do not gossip. Do not talk about her to her friends or yours, and never talk about her behind her back.
Did You Know?
Did you know? The Code of Chivalry began in 14th-century England as a combination of military rules and Christian values.
