Hi everyone and welcome to Tip Talk from ISCAR's Tech Center!
Controlling the chips in grooving and turning operations can be very challenging, especially when machining long chipping materials such as alloy steel, low carbon steel, stainless steel, and high temperature alloys.
Poor chip control in Groove-Turn operations can lead to many problems:
• Shortened tool life of the insert and holder.
• Frequent machine's stoppage for evacuating the chips that leads to lower productivity.
• Chips jamming causes poor surface quality or even a tool breakage, especially in deep grooving applications.
How do we solve chip control problems?
• Increasing the feed rate can assist in breaking the chips. However, in many cases it cannot be implemented properly due to poor surface quality and tool breakage risk.
• Using a Pecking technique can also solve the problem, but this option usually leads to lower tool life and increased machining time.
• High pressure coolant can also be a very successful solution. However, in most of the laths it is not available.
• Suitable Chipformers are the optimal solution for chip control.
Iscar offers a large variety of Groove-Turn inserts that feature unique chipformers designed for machining many types of materials in various cutting parameters. Our latest product launch is the successful T-type chipformer that provides an optimal performance in full grooving applications, partial grooving applications, turning and profiling of wide range of materials and cutting parameters.
