August 11, 1880. The West Jersey and Atlantic Railroad was in its inaugural season. On a charter excursion from Philadelphia to Atlantic City, 1300+ passengers spent the day enjoying the beaches and the city by the sea. On the return home that evening, a stop in Mays Landing, NJ would prove fatal for 30 of their Irish Catholic passengers. The following Memorial Tribute was commemorated at the accident scene on the train trestle on the Great Egg Harbor River on the 142nd anniversary.
