Mike Harry, Executive Producer, Nathan Love, NY: "Goodby, Silverstein & Partners came to us with the concept of a family of Kernels who get so into watching a film that their excitement ultimately causes them to pop.
"We wanted these spots to play out like :30 second sitcoms instead of commercials. Studying some of our favorite TV shows, we took cues from set design and scene layout. We also paid close attention to character development: The Kernels were the star of the show so each one of them had to be interesting in design and personality.
"We knew we had to incorporate the Pop Secret logo into the scene and initially struggled with where to place it. Early in the creative process we discovered the best place to put the branding was, well, everywhere. The combination of a blue, movie-lit room with golden, buttery kernels was a match made in heaven. Walking away from these spots you remember two things - pop corn and watching movies at home.
"The technical challenge was making the texture of the popped kernels look fluffy and delicious. We took magnified photo reference of actual popcorn and quickly realized the shape and textures proved too unappealing blown up to these sizes. Our artists ended up re-designing and digitally painting the popped kernels to allow for more 'taste-ability' and to make them lovable characters that would look great animated, lit, and rendered.
"Working with GS&P was a great experience - we were able to offer input into the scripts and the casting of the voices for the characters. We also produced the original score and sound design.
