(10 May 2014) The daughter of Cuban President, Raul Castro, joined hundreds of people at a gay rights parade in Havana on Saturday.
Waving a mini gay pride flag, Mariela Castro marched to the beat of congas as she took part in celebrations ahead of the International Day Against Homophobia.
She is the director of the Cuba's National Sexual Education Centre and the island's most prominent gay rights activist.
"Cuban society is making progress in this fight," she told the media.
"Although we still face resistance from people who do not understand the undeniable inclusive nature of the Cuban revolutionary process," Castro added.
It's the seventh consecutive year gay rights supporters have taken to the streets of Havana to march alongside Mariela Castro.
Before Raul Castro became president, there were no gay pride parades allowed on the island.
May 17 has been designated as World Day to Fight Against Homophobia because on this date in 1990 the World Health Organisation eliminated homosexuality and bisexuality from its list of mental diseases.
