Is nigella sativa a miracle herb for the treatment of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis? Well, I wouldn’t call it a miracle herb (though some do) but it is one of very few treatments that have a double-blind placebo-controlled trial backing its use. Studies have shown that black seed oil has the potential to help lower thyroid antibodies, increase thyroid lab tests, reduce the size and vascularity of the thyroid gland, and help with weight loss (without exercise). These benefits are mediated through a variety of active compounds found in black seed oil the most notable of which is called thymoquinone. Unfortunately, standard black seed oil supplements contain very little of this active ingredient so it’s hard to get the benefits without taking very high doses. If you want to use black seed oil to treat Hashimoto’s then I recommend taking 500mg twice per day using a 3% thymoquinone extract.
