This is the follow-up video to the "Real World MPG", where I was able to demonstrate that you can get 34 MPG, maybe more in the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness on Interstate roads. I apologize for the "uhhhhs" and "uhmmms" and the length of this video; my video editor is busy prepping for final exams. In this video I explain the trick/hack that I use to get the best miles per gallon out of my Subaru vehicles. For example, the EPA rates the 2017 Impreza Sport at 27 MPG City, I'm able to get about 2+ MPG more. The EPA rates the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness at 25 MPG City. So far I'm able to get exactly 26 MPG on my 13 mile one-way daily commute, as shown in this video. I suspect there are two reasons that I'm not able to get better than two miles per gallon using my cruise control trick. First, the cruise control in the Crosstrek is much more aggressive when it comes to maintaining the set speed. I live in a hilly area of metro Atlanta, so the cruise control in the Impreza Sport allows me to coast down hills with absolutely no braking (except engine braking). The Crosstrek Wilderness on the other hand will apply the brakes as soon as it detects it's going slightly faster than the desired speed set by the driver, especially when descending a hill! I've had to adapt to this new version of Subaru's cruise control and tap the cruise control button to pause it, until I've reached the bottom of the hill. Second, I suspect the Final Drive ratio of 4.111 in the Crosstrek is hampering the low RPM acceleration on the uphills. The Impreza Sport, with a Final Drive ratio of 3.700 will sit at a lower RPM on the same exact hill, with the same exact speed set on the cruise control. This is by no means a knock on the Crosstrek Wilderness. In fact, it's the very opposite as far as overall driving enjoyment goes. Sure, it might lose one mile per gallon or so to the Impreza Sport, but if I wanted the best MPG out of a Crosstrek, I would have just bought the Base, Sport or Limited version.
