Just when I thought I had looked at everything there was to look at regarding The Sphinx, I came across a number of rare photographs, as well as a short archaeological paper about a now lost Sphinx Temple.

This means there were at least five Sphinx Temples throughout dynastic history. The first and oldest sits directly to the east of The Sphinx, a mysterious temple that we are told in Old Kingdom, but by all accounts, was completely covered over by the time the 18th Dynasty Egyptians occupied the Giza Plateau.

The second Sphinx Temple is now lost but the foundations were discovered to the northeast of the monument. A couple of rough diagrams is all that remains, and it is believed that this was likely the brainchild of 18th dynasty pharaoh, Thutmose I.

The third was also built to the North East, but closer to the Sphinx. It seems to have replaced the temple of Thutmose I, but was also built by another 18th dynasty king, this time Pharaoh Amenhotep II.

The fourth temple sat between the paws of The Sphinx, possibly dating back to Ramesses II in the 19th Dynasty, so, where is the fifth?

Well this is one that has barely been discussed because the person that excavated it in the 1920s and 1930s, Emile Baraize, did not record it in any journal or book, there are not even any personal notes, and he then destroyed it.
