Salman Rushdie Attack, Islam & The Satanic Verses

In recent news the prolific writer Salman Rushdie author of the Satanic Verses was attacked. Rushdie has faced over 30 years of death threats for his publication and the Iranian leader in 1989 issued a religious decree or Fatwa on Rushdie which put him in hiding. Is this not a clear attack on Religious freedom, freedom of speech & being able to express oneself?
