This is Lactated Ringer's. This is not medical advice. We're going to break down the fine print on the bag of this commonly used balanced salt solution. There are 600mg of sodium chloride per 100cc which is less than the 900mg per 100cc found in normal saline. It contains 130meq/L of sodium.Careful here in patients with traumatic brain injury and other neurological issues. It contains 4meq/L of potassium.A common misconception is that these 4meq/L are going to add to the potassium already in the blood and cause hyperkalemia. It does not work this way.It contains 2.7mEq/L of calcium.Careful here in using it as a carrier fluid for blood. It contains 109meq/L of chloride. This is much less than saline and therefore does not create the hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis. It has 28meq/L of lactate, but note that this is sodium lactate. It is not lactic acid.LR does not create a lactic acidosis as many erroneously assume. There's much more I can't cover in one minute. Check out my stories for more.
