Police were deployed into Berlin’s Neukoelln neighbourhood on New Year’s Eve, setting up checkpoints on Sonnenalle, the bustling heart of the city’s Arab and Muslim community.
According to multiple German media outlets, the police were deployed to enforce a fireworks ban specifically on Sonnenalle. A pro-Palestine protest organised by AATMA Berlin was supposed to take place in the same area on New Year’s Eve but was reportedly cancelled at the last minute by the police.
