(13 Jun 2017) LEADIN:
Pro-government fighters have clashed with Houthi rebels in As-Silw district.
The Popular Resistance force claims it now has full control of the Republican Palace in nearby Taiz.
STORYLINE:
The rattle of gunfire is unleashed over the As-Silw countryside, south east of Taiz.
Fighters from the pro-government Popular Resistance group are battling Houthi rebels for control of the area.
The As-Silw district is home to a number of mountainous villages overlooking Dimnat Khadir district, one of the bordering areas between Yemen's northern and southern provinces.
This heavy fighting comes as fierce clashes hit Al-Tashrefat military camp and the Republican Palace east of the city, landmarks that have witnessed a month of fighting.
Part of Taiz City is covered with smoke, the result of air strikes by the Saudi-led coalition on Houthi positions north east of Taiz.
Residents stand by, some of them filming on their phones, as a strike comes in.
Fourteen strikes hit the Sofitel Hotel Taiz on Sunday, which the rebels have turned into military barracks.
Sources in the Popular Resistance forces have declared full control over the Republican Palace, but fighting and the exchange of gunfire is still going on there.
The war pits the coalition of mostly Arab Sunni countries against the Houthis, who seized Yemen's capital and some other areas in 2014 and forced the internationally recognised government to flee the country.
Yemen's war has killed more than 10,000 civilians and pushed the Arab world's poorest nation to the brink of famine. The conflict has also led to the displacement of around three million Yemenis.
