I’m doing a full deep-ass dive on the wedding on the podcast in a few weeks, but DAMN. I would’ve never guessed in a million years it was going to end up costing this much.
It felt like—at every turn—a new expense popped up, even until the last minute of realizing we needed thousands in cash for tips (something I didn’t know was customary).
It felt like most of the estimates we originally agreed to somehow managed to come back higher when all was said and done for reasons we didn’t anticipate, and even choosing the most inexpensive photography or floral packages still racked up thousands in costs. Worth it, but…whoah. Surprising if you aren’t prepared for wedding mania.
Originally, we didn’t want to spend more than $25,000—that seemed outrageously high to me, but that was the amount that aligned with our priorities and family.
But I also didn’t want to DIY anything, either; I didn’t want my life/full-time job to become planning a wedding, so I opted for convenience in areas where a more budget-conscious plan probably would’ve been doing it myself (e.g., we just signed on for the food + liquor package instead of trying to go hunt down our own alcohol and hire an independent bar tender).
We didn’t do real save the dates, we did inexpensive invites with online RSVP, we didn’t do bachelorette/bachelor parties… like, it felt like we skipped a LOT of the normal pomp + circumstance, and somehow still managed to run a $50,000 bill.
I had no party favors. No guest books. No photo booths or decorations beyond simple flowers. We intentionally chose a venue that was naturally beautiful so we wouldn’t have to deck the place out! (Though, admittedly, it was still a very sought-after venue and was clearly not cheap.)
It was a lovely evening, and a TON of fun to get everyone together, but I’m shook that—even as a person who “gets” money—I still managed to go way, way over-budget (partially because everything gets paid for little by little over many months, and I wasn’t tracking anything closely).
I’ll be covering how we paid (and who chipped in), a more in-depth analysis of costs, and allllll my learnings on the podcast in a few weeks.
