Toyota has introduced its new V-Active technology to the "unbreakable" HiLux, aiming to enhance fuel efficiency, smoothness, responsiveness, and off-road capabilities. This innovative technology offers electric assistance to the robust 150-kilowatt, 500-newton meter HiLux 2.8-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine, available on select four-wheel-drive automatic double-cab models.
The integration of V-Active technology results in fuel consumption improvements of up to 9.5 percent. This is achieved by combining the outputs from the engine and six-speed automatic transmission with a 48-volt electric motor-generator, a 48-volt lithium-ion battery, and an idle-stop system. The 48-volt system delivers a smoother, quieter, and more responsive performance while reducing engine load during acceleration, particularly from a standstill. Efficiency gains also come from reducing the idling speed from 720 revolutions per minute to 600 revolutions per minute.
A belt system drives the compact motor generator, which charges the 48-volt lithium battery installed under the rear seats. This battery consists of 13 cells with a capacity of 4.3 ampere-hours and weighs just 7.6 kilograms. The system can provide up to 8.4 kilowatts of power and 65 newton meters of torque through the motor-generator to assist the engine. Additionally, the 48-volt battery supplies power to the vehicle’s 12-volt system via a new direct current to direct current converter.
Enhancements include a new two-arm belt tensioner and stronger belt material, contributing to improved drivability and a quieter ride while maintaining the durability HiLux is known for. Deceleration and braking energy, typically lost, is converted into electricity and stored in the 48-volt battery for future use. Hydraulic braking, combined with regenerative braking, creates a more effective and natural deceleration feel, supporting safer downhill maneuvers.
The idle-stop system saves fuel and ensures smooth, quiet engine restarts as the motor generator remains connected to the engine, bypassing the conventional starter motor. A selectable "long" mode extends engine shut-off while stationary, further contributing to fuel efficiency.
For the first time, V-Active technology variants are paired with a six-mode Multi-Terrain Select to enhance off-road capabilities. This system offers tailored traction control for various surfaces: auto, sand and mud (low and high range), deep snow and dirt (high range), and rock (low range). Despite these advancements, HiLux with V-Active technology maintains the same 3,500-kilogram braked towing capacity and 5,850-kilogram gross combined mass as the rest of the HiLux four-wheel-drive range.
Additional updates include a tailgate damper with a gas strut and steel cable on pick-up variants for easier loading and unloading. Styling enhancements feature a redesigned front fascia and a new black honeycomb grille on most models. The SR double-cab grades with automatic transmission now include front and rear parking sensors, while SR5 double-cab automatic grades and above gain a wireless charger and two rear USB-C ports for added device charging capability.
