During the German occupation of the Netherlands, Anne Frank and her family were hiding in concealed rooms behind a bookcase in an abandoned office building. Anne kept a diary in which she penned her last entry on August 1st, 1944. After struggling to define the "better half" of her personality, which is "much purer, deeper and finer. No one knows Anne's better side, and that's why most people can't stand me," "A voice within me is sobbing, "You see, that's what's become of you. You're surrounded by negative opinions, dismayed looks and mocking faces, people who dislike you, and all because you don't listen to the advice of your own better half" she concluded that she "keeps on trying to find a way of becoming what I would like to be, and what I could be, if...if there weren't any other people living in the world." Three days later, Anne and her family were discovered and arrested by the Gestapo and transported to concentration camps, first to Auschwitz then to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp where Anne died a few months later at the age of fifteen.
