• Sixth Permanent Strategy Committee Meeting. The Kashag convened the 6th Permanent Strategy Committee Meeting in Switzerland on 13 May 2024. The 3-day bi-annual meeting will follow up with the implementation of measures chalked out at the previous five meetings and additionally, will discuss the progress of the ongoing strategic programs and deliberate on future advocacy initiatives as per the committee’s objectives.
• U.S. to Hike China Tariffs. President Joe Biden unveiled steep tariff increases on an array of Chinese imports including electric vehicles, computer chips and medical products, risking an election-year standoff with Beijing in a bid to woo voters who give his economic policies low marks. Biden will keep tariffs put in place by Trump while ratcheting up others, including a quadrupling of EV duties to over 100%. U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai said the revised tariffs were justified because China was continuing to steal U.S. intellectual property and, in some cases, had become "more aggressive".
• Blinken makes unannounced visit to Kyiv as Ukraine faces Russian challenge in east. Secretary of State Blinken is in Ukraine on a previously unannounced trip to deliver what he called a strong message of reassurance at a time when Ukrainian forces are facing fierce attacks by Russia’s military in the eastern part of the country and are awaiting the arrival of new weapons shipments from allies help with defense. VOA's Senior Diplomatic Correspondent Cindy Saine reports.
• UN chief 'appalled' by escalating military activity in Rafah. UN chief Antonio Guterres is "appalled" by Israel's escalating military activity in and around Rafah, a spokesman says, as clashes have rocked the densely crowded southern Gaza city, and subdued celebrations marked Israel 76th independence anniversary on Tuesday , with some traditional state events cancelled or altered to reflect the country's pain for its losses since the Oct.7 attack and for hostages still held in Gaza.
• Sara Literature Forum. Tibetan schools in India saw impressive results in their recent board exams. Overall, the Class 12 pass rate was nearly 99.69%, with 11 schools achieving 100%. Kalden Tsering and Rinchen Karma Tsomo from Tibetan Children's Village School were the academic stars, scoring 95.2% and 95% respectively, earning them the Department of Education's Excellence Award and recognition at the upcoming Tibetan Democracy Day.
