Grigory Shtern was born on the 6th of August 1900 into the family of a Jewish doctor in the Ukrainian city of Smila, then part of the Russian Empire. He graduated from high school in Kiev and got involved in Bolshevik underground activities. While in school, he joined the Social Democrats and then the Left Socialist Revolutionaries. In 1918, right after graduating, he was arrested for possessing weapons and spreading illegal literature and revolutionary propaganda.
