Speaking to some of his most loyal supporters, U-S President Bill Clinton has thanked black Americans for standing up for him.
Without mentioning the Monica Lewinsky controversy, Clinton thanked the Congressional Black Caucus for understanding what he called the "true meaning of repentance and atonement."
Clinton spoke on Saturday evening at the annual dinner of the caucus in Washington.
He credited black lawmakers for supporting his policies and helping to promote what he called America's "prosperity and progress."
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"I have a speech I want to give, but first I'd like to say something apart. I want to thank you for standing up for America, with me. I want to thank you for standing up for me and understanding the true meaning of repentance and atonement. I want to thank you for standing up consistently for people over politics, for progress over partisanship, for principle over power, for unity over division. I want to thank you for standing up beyond race, for the very best of America. I am very, very grateful. I am grateful for what the Congressional Black Caucus has done over the past 28 years to expand and enhance the promise of America and to lead our country towards a single, shining ideal."
