CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- A study released Wednesday, May 13, has the latest on surgery during pregnancy. The report said surgery does appear to be safe for women even if they are pregnant. Researchers in the Surgery Journal of the America Medical Association specifically looked at complications in women after surgery and compared those who were pregnant to those who were not. When nearly 2,800 women who were pregnant were compared to more than 500,000 that were not, researchers found no difference in complications after surgery in the women who were pregnant. They wanted to see if pregnancy led to higher risks or levels of complications after surgery and didn't find this to be true. They did find that even though women who were pregnant had more emergency surgeries rather than scheduled surgeries, that didn't influence after surgery complication risks. Experts at the Cleveland Clinic said that was important to know because women often hesitate to have surgery when pregnant due to fears of complications and shouldn't do that based on the study if it's in their best interest. Its important to note is that there was a larger number of women studied with all types of different surgeries. While any mom would naturally not choose pregnancy as the ideal time for surgery, it's important to note that complications are not higher for mom.
