Do you dream of having your own veggie patch and growing all your own food at home? Or maybe you’re already a seasoned gardener and you’re looking for more ideas for fresh produce to grow in the backyard. Either way, this video is for you.
One of the best additions to your veggie patch? The humble broad bean.
Why? Because it’s great to cook with, and will grow under almost any conditions.
In this episode of Green Space, Fabian Capomolla (The Hungry Gardener), shows you exactly how you can grow broad beans (also known as fava beans) at home with ease.
The broad bean has likely been in the Mediterranean diet since 6000 BCE, similarly to chickpeas, lentils and peas. It is one of the oldest cultivated plants in the world.
For Fabian, broad beans are a special one. His grandparents are from Sicily, where the broad bean is thought to be lucky. Why? Because during the Middle Ages in Italy when almost all crops were failing, the broad bean flourished, which prevented a widespread famine.
Not only are they lucky, but being a source of protein and carbohydrates, and vitamins A, B1, and B2, they’re great for you, too. And, if you’re not super confident with growing your own veggies yet, the ease with which they grow means they’re a great option for beginners to start with.
So, why not make this easy-to-grow, lucky plant a staple in your garden and table?
In this video, Fabian will show you how to plant them and prevent the plant from falling over, how to plant them at the right time, how to sow them and how to cook with them. Fabian will equip you with all the tools you need to start growing your own broad beans.
