Mary, the mother of Jesus, had a visitation from the angel of the Lord who had just prophesied that she would birth the Christ child. (This story can be found in Luke 1:26-38.) Stunned, she visits her cousin, Elizabeth, who was also pregnant with a miracle child, John the Baptist, to share her news.
Elizabeth, being filled with the Holy Spirit, blesses Mary and the hope within her. Like Mary, we all need someone in our life who puts oxygen into our dreams. Are you encouraging and empowering others in their gifts?
The Magnificat (Luke 1:42-55) is Latin for “oh magnify!” It is the greatest hymn in the Bible. Faith needs to sing. Mary erupts in praise as she realizes the greatest blessing in history has been given to her. She magnifies the Lord. We, too, must magnify the Lord, whether we feel we can sing or not. Like Mary, we have to have the Word in us so that it will automatically flow out of us in praise!
God’s power, holiness and mercy are the content of highest praise.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer said of the Magnificat: it is “the most passionate, the wildest, one might even say the most revolutionary hymn ever sung.”
What is your magnificat to the Lord today?
