The Matjes Spiced Herring (Krydder Sild) open sandwich is a tradition to eat in Denmark. Our family has the Danish open face herring (sild) sandwich everyday for lunch or dinner. When we have a Danish celebration, we traditionally have Danish beer and schnapps with the herring sandwich and say say Skål frequently!
We use matjes or a spiced herring for this open face sandwich.
Smørrebrød Danish Open Face Herring Sandwich Recipe
Ingredients:
* 1 piece of rye bread
* butter
* 3 or 4 of tomato slices
* 1 sliced egg
* 3 or 4 pieces of matjes herring
* 6 or 8 raw onion ring slices
* a sprinkle of capers
