Weg der Schweiz - Route 99 otherwise known as the Swiss history trail, runs along the shores of Urnersee, or the southern most part of Vierwaldstattersee or Lake Lucern. We arrived in Seelisberg by taking a boat from Brünnen to Rütli. Then, we took a funicular up to Seelisberg village above Rütli meadow where the original Swiss Confederation was formed. From there, the route heads gently up and and then down along forest and field paths - always under the watchful eye of Oberbauenstock peak. The views of the Gottard pass grew ever more spectacular along the way. Eventually, the path descends sharply down stairs for 500 meters to the shores of the lake in Bauen. From Bauen, you walk through tunnels filled with artwork and into the wind corridor along the southern end of the lake where kite surfers and windsurfers play in abundance. Finally, the route crosses the Reuss River delta before turning up toward Flüelen.
