Sweet Jesus, is this situation and play not beautiful?
Any ballplayer trying to score from 1st on a double in the gap is good for the aesthetics of the game. A catcher trying to turn the trick, while he's wearing that classic brown Padres jersey, makes just everything about this event epic at every level.
There's a pleasure in that optic and audio, no? Late August shades of green, on both the grass and the ivy; the rise of the crowd as the party vibe in Wrigley came to realize that home plate was where excitement was going to be going down; Terry Kennedy chugging around third as you'd expect a catcher would, wonderfully captured by Arne Harris in the WGN production truck; and of course there was Harry in our ear, unburdened by the stroke that would slow him down in years to come, bellowing in absolute rapture as Larry Bowa's relay found Jody Davis's mitt, which soon found the Pads' baserunner before he could plate the run. Jez, man. Freak'n beautiful.
Kennedy doesn't get sent by the third base coach in today's game. Fair enough. I suppose discretion is the better part of valor when considering the run scoring probabilities of a runner on third with two outs already recorded. But, man...don't try to tell me that the assembled didn't have an absolute blast watching that sequence. Even if you were a San Diego fan, even if you cared about Padre Ws to the degree that the SoCal lifestyle wasn't as easy goin' and chill as is the stereotype, Terry Kennedy's funky slide to get around the sprawling Cubbie catcher was wicked cool. If you were a kid in '82 (totally my wheelhouse), you practiced that exact play on someone's lawn, again, because sport if fun and that play at home was wildly fun and entertaining.
My only regret is that this clip wasn't captured in 1080p with 60 frames per second.
