Syrian rebels have reportedly taken control of the historic Christian town of Maaloula, north of Damascus. Government media outlets deny this is the case but it is difficult to check any of these reports independently. The town's residents speak the almost extinct Aramaic language, which Jesus Christ preached in more than 2,000 years ago. Its cathedrals are some of the oldest of the Christian faith.
