Today I'm going over 10 bath bomb-making issues (& how to resolve them). Issues if mixture was too dry or drying out when molding: 1. Powdery Bath Bombs. 2. Small cracks: Make small batches because the mix dries out fairly quickly & it'll never be as good as it was. You can wet the mix more. I've formulated a spray that works best: 15 milliliters water, 15 milliliters carrier oil, 5 milliliters polysorbate 80. Or: 10 milliliters water, 10 milliliters oil, 10 milliliters fragrance oil, 3 milliliters polysorbate 80. If you notice cracks, shrink wrap the bomb & dry 24 hours. 3. Crumbling Bombs: You can spray the mixture to remold. Or sieve bombs to a fine powder & re-wet the mixture if they're completely dry. ***The mix will require a lot more wet ingredients the second [this] time around. Or you can recycle the powder. Issues if mixture was too wet or wet ingredients were added too quickly: 4. Huge cracks in the middle: Always add wet slowly while stirring. And/or add citric acid last, after wet has been added. 5. Bombs growing or puffing up: It's too wet if the mix moves or puffs up slowly. Stir it until the mix no longer puffs up before you mold. 6. Warts or raised bumps: Means mixture was too wet, wet was added too quickly, or ingredients were mixed enough. Always sieve & fully mix ingredients. Also, salt & other humectants can cause warts. 7. Sides won't stick together: This could mean the mixture wasn’t wet enough or the mixture is too wet & sticking to mold. But more than likely it’s a molding issue. Fill the mold, pack it, put loose mix on top.. Do that for both sides. Then smoosh the 2 sides together. 8. Soft bombs : Could mean the mixture was too wet, it's humid, or it could be from improper molding & not packing enough mix in. Mold the bomb, take it out, turn it, & mold it once more. If you notice any soft spots, add more mix to the other side, & mold it again. But more than likely soft bombs are from too much oil &/or polysorbate 80 (decrease these). For harder bath bombs, incorporate water in recipe &/or hardeners, like clay or cream of tartar. 9. Flat bottom: Means mixture was too wet or not enough mix was added. You should support the bath bomb's shape while they're drying. 10. If the Bombs wont float: this could be from too much wet ingredients (making the bath bomb too heavy). For a standard recipe (1 cup baking soda, 1/2 cup citric acid, & 1/4 cup corn starch), you should only add 15-20 milliliters of wet ingredients. But more than likely bombs are not dry enough. Make them & dry them 12-24 hours. Then shrink wrap them. Also, some bomb shapes just float better than others. If you're having issues, it's normal & it's not your fault. There are several factors that play into this. But there are 2 things you must remember going forward: First, bath bombs are extremely finicky. A recipe that worked fine 1 day may not work the next. Second, Bath bombs are tricky & meticulous. They require a perfect balance of wet to dry ratios. All I can say is practice & experimentation is the key to conquering bath bombs.
***Why do the wet ingredients gel up & become one big blob? I don't know the science of why this happens, but it's normal & polysorbate 80 is the culprit. Some ingredients don't activate it & others do. This will not affect your recipe. Simply place the blob in the dry ingredients & mix as you normally would.***
