2015-16 was a season to remember. With a new coach and continued uncertainty, this group of student athletes have had to deal with so much off of the court but when it came down to when it meant the most this team triumphed. They captured the imagination of an entire state with their glorious run. This year was again a roller coaster ride from the start of the season to the Big West Tournament run and a first ever NCAA Tournament win.
To show our appreciation to the boys and their families and friends miles away we put together some highlights from this past season.
2015-16 Sheriff Drammeh. Slim Reef.
In early fall a few of us Section EE hooligans were at the Aloha Stadium parking lot tailgating before a UH Football game. (Section EE hooligans also go to football). Right outside the student tailgate were the basketball boys and it was pointed out to me that the real skinny kid is the player from Sweden—Sheriff Drammeh. Frankly we didn’t know much about him.
As the season progressed he was an integral part of the Hawaii 5-0 bench mob. I attribute his lightweight frame could be easily carried out for these 5-0 stunts and not injure those who carried him. But soon Slim Reef saw himself on the court. He was a pest on defense. Long and lanky he made up for his slim frame with tenacious defense and the ability to take charges. I assure you every charge he took was like a shot in the gut. These were legit charges. No faking. No Hollywood. Just imagine if a 225 lb power forward was running towards you. You would fall down too. Sheriff did it better.
His game expanded and who can forget his shot clock expiring 3 point shot that grazed the Stan Sheriff ceiling vs UC Irvine. With clutch shots and more charges taken it was clear that Sheriff was shaping his role on the team.
On March 12 that long and skinny kid was sitting atop the rim cutting the net before the ladder was even brought out. There are a few images that will always stick with this team and that is one of them.
We look forward to his Sophomore year.
