Acne in pregnancy.
Acne frequently is exacerbated with hormonal changes including pregnancy. Statistically 50% of female patients will improve their acne during pregnancy, on the contrary 50% will know there's a flareup of their condition due to hormonal influx.
.
Dermatologist can find effective but most importantly safe ways to treat acne during the gestation period of pregnancy. Here are some hints as to how you can effectively manage acne at home with absolute safety.
.
Washes. If you have sensitive skin use a bland cleanser. If you can tolerate salicylic acid look for a product which contains 1.5 to 2% salicylic acid. Brand names include Cerave, La Roche & Neutrogena. The use of salicylic acid with concentrations of 2% or less is considered safe in pregnancy.
.
The second topical to consider is benzyl peroxide. Though this has no pregnancy writing it works as an oxidising agent in this considered by most dermatologist to be safe. This can be used as a topical dab on treatment to zits, pustules and cysts. It is relatively ineffective for blackheads. Start off with once a day application increasing to twice a day as tolerated. You should be cautious if you are also using salicylic acid as benzoyl peroxide can also cause skin irritation.
.
Another safe topical agent is that of azelaic acid. This is naturally derived acid can be found in grains. Look for formulation of a azelaic acid ranging between 10 to 20%. This acid is classified as category A and hence is absolutely safe in pregnancy.
.
Chemical peels are another safe alternative. High concentration salicylic acid namely greater than 15% will not be used by most dermatologist. They will however consider the use of alpha hydroxy acids such as glycolic or lactic acid as these are safer in pregnancy.
.
Another excellent option for treating pregnant women is that the phototherapy. Phototherapy uses light in the blue and red spectrum which functions to kill bacteria by activating light sensitive chemicals within acne lesions including cysts. Light sources include that of laser emitting diodes or vascular lasers.
.
Finally don't forget the importance of an acne diet which can be effective in some patients. This diet means low sugar, abstinence of refined foods, & a dairy free diet. If you suffer acne in pregnancy be guided by your treating dermatologist.
