A bill that cleared the House of Commons is widely viewed as an attempt to stifle the boycott, divestment, and sanctions movement against Israel.
The economic activity of public bodies bill, introduced by Conservative MP Michael Gove, would make it illegal for local authorities such as councils, universities, and the National Health Service, to boycott Israel. Debate over the bill comes against a backdrop of growing global support for the boycott and divestment movement.
MP Chris Stephens reflected on the UK’s history, as it pertains to apartheid South Africa. By the 1980s, more than 100 local authorities participated in anti-apartheid initiatives. Stephens pointed out that had the anti-boycott bill been in place in the 1980s, it would have banned councils from supporting the anti-apartheid movement.
