Banasree Sengupta is one of those rare breed of bengali singers whose popularity is more due to her basic bengali songs than the film songs she has rendered. Her film songs are hardly a few, compared to the vast catalog of modern songs she has rendered for her fans.

Though she was born in a family of ayurvedic doctors, however, her grandfather and father were classical singers of eminence in the region of Chinsurah & Hooghly. She too was introduced to music at an early stage of life and apart from her father she was under the tutelage of Ustad Sagiruddin Dagar & Pandit Usharanjan Mukhopadhyay & Pandit Shailen Bandyopadhyay. She was also one of the favorite artists of the famous music director Sudhin Dasgupta.

She started her singing for AIR in the year 1964 and her debut album was released in the year 1966.

She'll be ever remembered for her outstanding contribution to bengali modern songs.
