Police in Portland declared a riot early Saturday morning as Black Lives Matter protests converged around the Portland Police Bureau North Precinct. An estimated 200 people gathered after a march through North Portland from Irving Park.
Portland police said some people were throwing projectiles, shining lasers at officers, and broke police car windows.
While the protests initially focused on the killing of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and other members of the African-American community by police, the topic of federal involvement in the city's handling of the demonstrations has been a persistent issue.
State police, on the other hand, have withdrawn from Portland following a decision by Multnomah County District Attorney not to prosecute cases against some arrested during the protests.
