Meanwhile over at the UN Security Council, finance ministers from member nations unanimously adopted a resolution aimed at effectively hitting the Islamic State militant group where it hurts.
It urges countries to ″move vigorously″ to cut the flow of funds to ISIS by preventing its smuggling of oil and antiquities.
Sohn Jung-in reports.
It was the council′s first-ever meeting in the UN′s 70-year history led by finance ministers of the 15 member nations,... reflecting the gravity of threat the Islamic State group poses to the world.
The finance ministers unanimously passed a resolution designed to disrupt funds the extremist group gets from oil and antiquities sales, ransom payments and other criminal activities.
The resolution, drafted by the United States and Russia, is based on one that was first passed in 1999 to target Al-Qaeda following the September 11th attacks on the U.S.
Under the resolution,.... any individual or group supporting ISIS will be subject to UN sanctions, including an asset freeze, travel ban and arms embargo.
The resolution also urges a more vigorous and active participation from all countries by adopting laws that make the financing of ISIS and of other extremist groups a serious criminal offence.
The landmark Security Council meeting was attended by U.S. Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.
″Just as terrorist groups are innovating and diversifying, the international community must stay ahead of the curve to combat money laundering and the financing of terrorism.″
ISIS is believed to be the world′s wealthiest militant group with an estimated monthly revenue of 80 million U.S. dollars, coming from extortion and looted property, and from smuggling oil and gas.
