Our vision
“Towards A Society of Emotional Wellbeing”
Our mission
To offer confidential emotional support and provide public education so as to reduce the risk of suicide
To work and grow as a team by supporting each other
What do we do?
Befrienders Johor Bahru is a non-profit community service organization. We are multi-racial, non-religious and our service is available to everyone, from all walks of life, race, religion, age and gender. We had a soft launch on 1st August 2006. Befrienders offer free and confidential emotional support to callers through befriending. Our centre operates telephone line service from 4pm to 12 midnight daily at 07-3312300.
An email helpline was introduced on 1st August 2015 at sam@befriendersjb.org
If callers are feeling suicidal, worried, upset, in despair, confused or lonely, they can talk to us. They can share their innermost feelings without fear of criticism or judgment. Everything they tell us is strictly confidential. Through talking and discussing options, they may discover their strengths and resources. Sharing their feelings may make it easier for them to bear the burden of their worries.
What is it like to be a volunteer?
Befrienders are ordinary, friendly people over 24 years of age who are not afraid of distress and who can be depended upon to be totally confidential and committed.
To be a volunteer depends a lot on your open-mindedness, availability of time and caring nature. A Befriender’s duty is to be available once a week (a 3-hour shift duty) to befriend the suicidal and despairing. When contacted, a volunteer listens actively, does not pass judgment, criticize or give advice. A volunteer is also required to attend a regular common meeting once a month. Because of the time and emotional commitment required, many Befrienders make this their principal or only form of volunteer work.
There will be a preparation course consisting of weekly sessions of about 25 hours followed by a 3-6 months probationary period of befriending service into full membership.
