Watch and learn as our team performs Netra Basti on one another for a unique beauty ritual experience!
Our resident herbal scholar, Aubrey, leads the ASC team in a demonstration on how to perform Netra Basti (Ghee Eye Baths). Netra Basti is an ancient Ayurvedic ritual in which the eyes are bathed in warm, clarified butter called "ghee". Aubrey begins by explaining in depth the benefits of Netra Basti which are significant and nutritive, leaving the eyes refreshed, clean and hydrated. They include relieving eyelid tension, easing stress lines, reducing puffiness, reviving natural luster, enhancing vision depth, better color perception, improves memory, greater ease in vision, relief of sunburned eyelids, easing of dryness, less allergy discomfort, relief of body tension, eye surgery relief, and more!
Once she has is done thoroughly explaining the benefits of the treatment, she begins to exhibit the process step-by-step. Flour and water are used to make a dough ball that will create a seal around the eye so the ghee doesn’t leak out of the intended area. Once the dough balls are ready, the girls begin to fix them around each others eye areas appropriately. And the pouring begins! (**disclaimer**: make sure your index finger of whichever hand you will be using for the massage has been filed down considerably). The team members begin to pour the melted ghee into each other’s eyes and fix any leaks in the seal. Aubrey directs the receivers to open their eyes and look around in every direction to ensure the ghee penetrates the entire eye. One of the receivers, Courtney, shares her experience while her eye is enveloped in the ghee. She explains how it doesn’t feel like her eye is touching anything, and Aubrey replies by letting the girls know that the ghee is the same consistency as the fluid in the eye, which explains this occurrence. The givers begin massaging the receivers eye in a light motion, being careful to not put too much pressure directly onto the eyeball. The receiver directs the level of pressure and the areas around the eye in which the massage is given. The massage helps the ghee penetrate deeper into the eye socket and pull out any impurities that may be trapped. The session is ended by Aubrey explaining that in Ayurvedic and Hindu cultures, the cow is considered a very sacred beast. Butter is the essence of the cow and ghee is considered the essence of butter. With that said, the process of making ghee is steeped in a ritual of sacridity and brings with it humility and healing, resulting in a very profound experience.
Aubrey directs the givers to create a spout in the dough seal and gently pour the ghee out, pull the dough off and towel off their face.
The ASC team hopes you enjoyed our demonstration of Netra Basti Ghee Eye Baths.
