STORYLINE:
The Head of Libya's National General Congress Mohammad al-Magariaf visited the US consulate in Benghazi on Friday to show his sympathy for the killing of United States ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans.
"I want to offer my thanks to him (US ambassador Stevens), I want to thank him and to thank the American people who gave birth to such special diplomats," al-Magariaf said, his voice trembling with emotion.
The crowd of people who attacked the consulate were thought to have been provoked by an anti-Muslim film made in the US that denigrates Islam's Prophet Muhammad.
US officials said they suspect that the attack at the Benghazi consulate, which had also been the target of an unsuccessful attack in June, may have been only tangentially related to the film.
Al-Magariaf also said the attack was pre-planned on Friday.
"Definitely it was deliberate and pre-planned attacks in every sense of the word," al-Magariaf said.
Libyan officials said militants used civilians protesting the film as cover for a violent assault timed for the 11th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks.
