A few weeks ago, in the latest of several periodic swaps, Russia and Ukraine exchanged 90 prisoners of war, with the United Arab Emirates overseeing the exchange as an intermediary. Russian officials said prisoners brought home had faced mortal danger in captivity, despite video evidence showing that Russian POWs were in better condition compared to their Ukrainian counterparts. Independent UN investigators have accused Russian authorities of disregarding basic human rights and causing severe suffering to Ukrainian prisoners of war, as well as civilians.
