STORYLINE:
Thousands of Jewish pilgrims arrived on Tuesday morning to the wailing wall in Jerusalem for the annual priestly cast blessing, a part of the Passover celebration in the old city of Jerusalem.
Heavy security forces were brought to the area to prevent any disorders between the celebrators and the Palestinian population in the old city.
As the praying began, a group of right-wing activists, called the Temple Mount Faithful, demonstrated near the wailing wall for "the release of the temple mount from Palestinians hands".
The extreme group's members called Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon to open the temple mount for the Jewish people.
Hundreds of policeman surrounded the demonstrators and prevented them from entering the temple mount.
The fighting between Israelis and Palestinians, now in its seventh month, broke out after Ariel Sharon made controversial visit to the Al Aqsa Mosque compound in the temple mount area.
Sharon's visit came in the context of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks during which then-Prime Minister Ehud Barak had offered to settle for less than full Israeli control over the site, captured from Jordan in the 1967 Mideast war.
Israeli police have barred Jewish extremists from visiting the compound for fear of causing more violence.
The clashes have killed 461 people, including 378 Palestinians, 64 Israeli Jews and 19 others.
