They're back - those scammers calling you for missing jury duty. We've taken several calls from people asking if we've called them about missing jury duty.
Major Hughes says these are scam calls, but they seem very real and are often threatening. The scammer says he's with a law enforcement agency and says you could be arrested...unless. There's always an unless. The scammer says paying now will clear everything up. Sometimes, you're told to wire money; other times you're told to buy a gift card and then call them with the card information. A new twist is a QR code sent via text message for payment. It may also give the scammer access to your accounts.
Please don't fall for these calls and texts. You will NEVER receive requests like these from law enforcement, a government agency, or any court. If you live in Newport News and are worried you've been a victim of the jury duty scam, call us at 757-778-9366.
If you feel you've been the victim of any other scam, call the police department. #juryduty #scam #scammers #committedtomakingaidfference
