On January 1, 2024, at 4:10 PM local time (8:10 AM Italian time), Japan was struck by a violent earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6, causing several injuries and over 40 deaths. In reality, it was part of a seismic sequence, with dozens of aftershocks before and after the main one. The intense main shock, centered on the Noto Peninsula (Ishikawa Prefecture) on the western coast of the country, triggered a tsunami with waves reaching up to 120 cm in height, forcing hundreds of people to evacuate their homes. But why does Japan experience so many earthquakes, and why they are so powerful? In this video, we analyze the geological nature of Japan and try to understand the origin of these violent seismic phenomena.
