Several case series have reported that assisted reproductive technology (ART) treatment can increase the risk of relapses in women with multiple sclerosis (MS). However, whether ART treatment may trigger the development of MS is less clear. Melinda Magyari, MD, PhD, The Danish Multiple Sclerosis Center, Department of Neurology, Rigshospitalet, University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark, discusses the results of a study comparing the incidence of MS among women who had undergone ART treatment with women who had conceived a child without ART treatment. The study used Danish health registries and included 585,716 women, of which 63,791 were exposed to at least one initiated ART treatment cycle during the study period. It was found that women treated with ART do not seem to be at increased risk of developing MS compared to women not exposed to ART. This interview took place at the European Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis (ECTRIMS) Congress 2022 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
