General George Henry Thomas, a Virginia-born Unionist, was the greatest general of the American Civil War, according to David Decker, a Civil War storyteller. General Thomas never lost a battle or his portion of a battle, which cannot be said of Lee, Longstreet, or Stonewall Jackson. He was never overrun by the enemy, as were Grant and Sherman at Shiloh.
