When the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the Roe v. Wade abortion rights earlier this year, Canadians speculated that this country would become a destination, if not a safe haven, for Americans who could no longer get care in their home states.
As it stands, though, the system in Canada is struggling to provide for its own patients – even in the most populous province, Ontario.
A months-long investigation revealed a system at risk. Facing financial neglect, some Ontario abortion facilities are fighting every day to stay open. At the same time, the stakes are high: a recent Angus Reid Institute report reveals that one in six Canadian women say they have had a surgical abortion.
