In today's video Renee Teeley dives into the dark history of Coca-Cola.
Coke was created by John Pemberton, a slave owner that fought as a Confederate soldier in the Civil War. After getting injured, he became addicted to morphine.
While seeking alternatives to morphine, John began drinking Vin Mariani, a drink containing wine and cocaine. This popular wine and cocaine drink served as the inspiration for what would later become Coca-Cola.
In 1884 John created an early version of coca-cola using wine, cocaine, and kola nut for added caffeine. Hence the name, coca (for cocaine) and cola (for Kola nut).
Two years later the prohibition legislation was passed so John kept the cocaine, but replaced the wine with sparkling water and sugar.
It’s estimated that the first bottle of coca-cola contained 3.5mg of cocaine. In 1929 coca-cola become cocaine free, however, to this day Coca-Cola uses the coca leaf after the cocaine has been extracted.
