This is a great way to play melodically, while also learning a scale all over the neck. You should do this with other intervals too, like 3rds, 4ths, 5ths, 7ths, and so on. It can be hard at first, but if you spend some time with this every day, you'll nail it. Incorporate these concept into your daily practice routine, maybe 10-15 minutes per day.
