Cubes of ice were dropped in cups of fresh (tap) and salt water, then a drop of food coloring added on top of the ice cube. This time lapse video shows that the cold water around the ice cube sinks in the fresh water but floats in the salt water, thus explaining why the ice cube melts much faster in fresh water. The ice cube in the salt water is surrounded by cold water so it melts more slowly.
