Relations between Japan and South Korea had plunged to their lowest in decades after a bitter dispute over wartime forced labour, in 2018, spilled over into trade restrictions and a consumer backlash against Japanese goods. But a poll conducted in January 2023 suggested that Japan's likeability score among South Koreans had risen to the highest level since 2008.
