Chinese Nobel laureate Tu Youyou called on global medics to cooperate more in exploring Chinese and Western medicines, in her presentation at Nobel Lectures in Physiology or Medicine in Stockholm, capital of Sweden, on Monday.
In her 22-minute speech, Tu first expressed that the anti-malaria medicine Artemisinin came from the hard work of her team. It is the result of years of research and development by a project once involving 500 scientists in China.
"I'd like to express my sincere thanks again to all members from the Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, who had joined the Project 523 in combating malaria. They had devoted themselves into the study, discovery and application of Artemisinin and they had made great contributions. I'd like to thank all the organizations related with the Project 523 across the country. Without everyone's selfless cooperative teamwork spirit, we cannot bring Artemisinin to the world in such a short time," she said.
In her speech of "Artemisinin, gift from traditional Chinese medicine to world", Tu warned that there is still a big challenge to the world's public health, as some Artemisinin resistance cases have been discovered.
"Since the Artemisinin resistance has been verified in Greater Mekong river basins, the potential threat of spreading is under investigation. More than 100 experts in the program believe that the possibility to curb or eliminate drug resistance is very limited before the resistance spreads to the highly-infected areas. So curbing the drug resistance is urgent," said Tu.
The Nobel laureate stressed that more cooperative studies on Chinese and Western medicines should be made in the future to explore their potential.
"Chinese traditional medicine is a great treasure and medical workers should work hard to learn and explore. Artemisinin is discovered from this treasure. Through my experience in studying and exploring the anti-malaria medicine Artemisinin, I felt strongly that Chinese and Western medicines both have their own advantages, and they are complementary. Combination of the two will have great developing potential and promising prospects," she said.
More than 240 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa have benefited from the treatment, according to the WHO, and more than 1.5 million lives are estimated to have been saved since 2000, thanks to the drug.
