Şehzade Mustafa was the eldest son of Suleiman the Magnificent and his legal wife, Mahidevran Sultan. He was born in 1515 and was the heir apparent to the Ottoman throne. Mustafa was known for his military skills and leadership qualities. He played an active role in military campaigns alongside his father.
However, the relationship between Mustafa and his half-brother, Selim, grew tense as they both aspired to succeed their father as the Sultan. Some historical accounts suggest that the rivalry escalated due to the influence of Hürrem Sultan, one of Suleiman's later wives and mother of Selim.
In 1553, Mustafa was accused of treason by his father and was executed. The exact circumstances surrounding his execution remain debated among historians. Mustafa's death deeply affected Suleiman, as he regretted the decision and mourned his son's loss.
Mahidevran Sultan, Mustafa's mother, was one of Suleiman's wives. She held the position of Haseki Sultan, which was the highest rank for a wife in the Ottoman harem. Mahidevran was of Circassian origin and had a significant influence during her early years in the palace.
However, after the birth of Hürrem Sultan's son, Selim, Mahidevran's influence began to matter. Hürrem became Suleiman's favorite wife, leading to tensions between the two women. Eventually, Mahidevran lost her position and lived a quiet life in retirement. She outlived Suleiman and died around 1581.
