The towers were Austin’s original outdoor lights. A major restoration project got underway in 1993, with the tower at 13th Street and Coleto among the first of the 14 moonlight towers restored during the second phase of the special project. Each tower was disassembled, inspected, coated, sealed and reinforced, an effort that’s supposed to extend the life of the lights for another 50 to 75 years. Austin’s moonlight towers are the only examples of a lighting system that was popular in U.S. and European cities during the late 1800s.
